Search Delimiters allow you to control the fields within which your search is carried out. For example, searching for SHAKESPEARE will find books by Shakespeare and books about Shakespeare, as well as books with Shakespeare in their title. In contrast, searching for NA(SHAKESPEARE) will only return books written by Shakespeare.

Search delimiters can be used with multiple terms and any combination of Boolean operators (i.e., AND, OR and NOT). They can also be combined to further narrow your search. For example, you could enter NA(SHAKESPEARE) AND TI(KING NOT (HENRY OR RICHARD OR EDWARD)) to search for books by Shakespeare about kings, but not about King Henry, King Richard or King Edward. Needless to say, in this case it would be easier to simply enter NA(SHAKESPEARE) AND TI("KING LEAR").

The full list of search delimiters and the fields to which they correspond is provided in the table below. You can click on each term to learn more about it.

AB(Absrtract)
The AB delimiters is only used in publication searches. As its name suggest, this delimiter limits searches to the contents of publications' abstracts.

AU(Author) or CO(Contributor)
The AU and CO delimiters are only used in publication searches and function exactly the same. Thus, both AU and CO will return results where the search string matches the contributors, regardless of individuals' roles (e.g., author, translator, etc.).
When using these delimiters, it is useful to keep in mind that contributors' names are stored in Lastname, Firstname format. If you enter a search like NA(ALBERT EINSTEIN), this is of no consequence. However, the problem with a search like this is that getCITED inserts an AND between terms and thereby converts the search to NA(ALBERT AND EINSTEIN). As such, it returns all results having both names amongst their contributors and, in this particular case, that includes a book by Elizabeth Einstein and Linda Albert. You can stop these ANDs from being inserted by putting quotation marks around phrases, which forces getCITED to search for the exact phrase as opposed to the individual words. Thus, it is at this point that the way in which contributors' names are stored becomes important. More specifically, it means that, should you want to search for books by Albert Einstein, the correct way to do so is to enter NA("EINSTEIN, ALBERT").

CN(Country)
The CN delimiter can be used people, department/faculty and institution searches and, in each case, searches the names of the country in which the corresponding institution, organization or publisher is located. It is important to keep in mind that, like the DN and IN delimiters, when used in people searches, the CN delimiter will only return the names of people having institutional affiliations. Moreover, that the results will reflect the institutions' location as opposed to the location that might be provided in the individuals' permanent and current addresses.

DN(Department)
The DN delimiter can be used within people and department/faculty searches. In the latter, it searches for departments and faculties whose names match the criteria set out in the search string. In the former, it searches for people whose department or faculty name matches. Thus, as with CN and IN, it is important to keep in mind that when used within a people search DN will only return names of people having an institutional affiliation within the getCITED database.

DE(Description)
The DE delimiter can be used within department/faculty and institution searches. As its name would suggest, it limits searches to information contained with the Description field for departments and faculties in the case of the former, and institutions, organizations and publishers in the case of the latter.

IN(Institution)
In the case of publication searches, the IN delimiter limits searches to publications publishers' or, in the case of theses and dissertations, to the institutions at which they were completed. In the case of people, department/faculty and institution searches, it searches for institutions whose names match, or for people or departments whose institutions' names match. However, note that, in the case of people searches, as with CN and DN, the IN delimiter will only return names of people having an institutional affiliation with the getCITED database.

LO(Location)
The LO delimiter is only for use in publication searches and it limits searches to the location field. In the case of books and edited volumes, this is the location of the publisher. In the case of conferences, it is where the conference took place or, for upcoming conferences, where it will take place. Thus, the LO delimiter is extremely useful for anyone trying to find a conference in an area they'd like to visit!

NA(Name)
In the case of publication searches, the NA delimiter functions exactly the same as the AU and CO delimiters. In people, department/faculty and institution searches, it limits searches to the name fields of the entity corresponding to the search's name.

PN(Publisher)
The PN delimiter is only used in the context of publication searches. It serves the exact same function as the IN delimiter in this context and, thus, returns publications whose publisher name matches or, in the case of theses or dissertations, whose institution name matches.

SO(Source)
The SO delimiter is only used in the context of publication searches and is used to limit searches to the name of the journal in which an article must appear, the series of which a book is a part, or the conference at which a paper was presented or a presentation made.

SU(Subject)
In the context of publication searches, the SU delimiter limits searches to the publications' subject information. It can also be used in department/faculty and institution searches and, in these contexts, it limits searches to the Description field, thereby functioning in the same manner as the DE delimiter.

TI(Title)
In the context of publication searches, the TI delimiter limits searches to publications' titles. It can also be used in people, department/faculty and institution searches and, in these contexts, it serves the same function as the NA delimiter.

YR(Year)
The YR delimiter is only used in the context of publication searches and is used to return results corresponding to a particular calendar year. In the case of publications, this will be the year of publication; in the case of conferences, it will be the year in which the conference took place or will take place.
