ABSTRACT:
To determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium oocysts in wild birds in Zaria, Nigeria a total of 132 wild birds from different parts of Zaria were examined using the formol-ether concentration technique with safranin –methylene blue stain and auramine phenol stain using light microscopy and fluorescent microscopy respectively.
The total prevalence rate was 5.3%. The difference in prevalence rate between different species of wild birds sampled was not statistically significant (P>0.05).
This study confirms the presence of avian Cryptosporidium in wild birds in Zaria, Nigeria and indicates that different species of wild birds are potentially equally capable of being infected and transmitting the infection. This may pose a danger to public health
