ABSTRACT:
This article examines the identity and "existance" experience of gays in homophobic societies. The impact of prolonged psychological abuse against gays in these countries were studied by eliciting narratives from 50 gay males from China, Iran and Saudi Arabia. There emerged three common themes which showed the attempts of many to self-harm. This self-harm had led many of them in these countries to seek psychological evaluations which then led them to be imprisoned for being gay/homosexual. This study provides a perspective on gays in mono-cultural and mono-religious societies and the responsibility of mental health professionals in those countries to defend and protect the identity of those most vulnerable.
