ABSTRACT:
This research is addressed to study the population density and growth of the Upper Progo River Basin, covering Temanggung and Magelang Districts and Magelang Municipality as a part of the densely populated areas of Java. The ultimate goals to be achieved are (a). identifying the spatial pattern and intensity of population density and population growth rates, (b). explaining their respective determining factors and (c). formulating various policy implications for regional development. Secondary data analysis are executed, employing both statistical and mapping techniques in order to recognize spatial pattern and intensity of population density and growth as well as their determining factors in order to identify their respective implications for regional development. The research reveals that the Upper Progo River Basin is a densely populated area, and to some extent population density is still gathering its pace. Higher population density in the Upper Progo River Basin is encountered in the sub-districts located along the main road connecting Yogyakarta - Semarang. Another cluster of population agglomeration is found in Kedu areas, associated with the long presence of tobacco plantation. Among important factors determining population density are the availability of socio-economic facilities, the availability of infrastructure and public as well as private transportation facilities, and the level of openness to information. Population density is positively related to the incidence of rice field and population with non-agricultural employment, but negatively related to the geographic elevation. Spatial pattern of population growth in the river basin shows some similarities with that of population density. Sub-districts with lower and medium population growth rates are encountered along the Semarang - Yogyakarta corridor. Whereas higher population growth is experienced by some sub-districts on the border of the river basin either in Magelang or Temanggung Regencies. This is most probably reflecting the lower level of family planning services as these sub-districts are among the most isolated parts of the river basin. Policy recommendations related to the provision of mobile service units to the isolated areas for family planning and other services and the stimulation of non-farm activities are offered to policy makers in order to improve socio-economic services and to lessen the dependency on agricultural lands and therefore to reduce the possibility of environmental degradation.
