ABSTRACT:

Saint Thomas Christians of malabar was united untill the Portuguese Missionaries arrived. The latinisation attempts by the Portuguese missionaries lead to a national revolt called Coonan Cross oath againt the Western Christian missionaries. Roman catholic church tried to reconcile the situation and to win back the Saint THomas Christians. They consecrated a native as a Bishop against the revolted leader who did not have a legitimate Bishopric consecration. This lead to division of the community and majority joined the leader with a legitimate Bishopric consecration from the Roman catholic Missionaries and the rival group contacted other non catholic eastern christians and got consecration for their leader.
The division caused split of the community and different ancient churches remained affiliated to two rival groups and a few of them were shared between both groups.

Discussion about population statistics and cuases of majority joining Catholic syrian group.
