ABSTRACT:
DEVELOPING EXPERTISE IN VOLLEYBALL: COACHING EDUCATION.

Volleyball is a sport of great interest in most countries. World championships and Olympic Games attract public interest, in general, but there are a large group of supporters involved in volleyball who pay a great deal of attention to these competitions and have various perceptions of volleyball. They also have a peculiar way to observe, analyze, study, research and discuss volleyball. They are the athletes and especially coaches from different performance levels, from the novice to the expert levels, with amazing knowledge and experiences in volleyball. But, how does someone become a high level coach? Should they have been an athlete before becoming coaches, good athletes or exceptional ones? What is the path to become a great coach? How do they develop through the various phases of expertise in sports? How does this learning process lead to reaching success as a coach? Books, courses, interaction with other coaches, by their own experience, or through mentoring or opportunity? What are these mental models regarding volleyball? In this symposium will discuss the development of volleyball coaches and about their knowledge to achieve the highest levels in Brazil, Portugal and United States. How do their efforts in other countries help develop programs to prepare volleyball coaches and athletes with the help and partnerships in other developed volleyball centers? We will also present some cultural and socioeconomic programs to improve volleyball and develop social aspects through sports. Where are we today and where we will be in the next years?
