ABSTRACT:
Guided Independent Study (GIS) facilitates students' design of their own learning, supervised by academic tutors in structured ways. The emphasis in GIS needs to be more on successfully facilitating independent student study, rather than on teaching. Good practice in GIS requires that students are not simply left to work on their own in an unstructured way. Nor is GIS simply an add-on to students' learning experience unrelated to the learning outcomes of their course. GIS should be highly relevant to students' learning aims and should promote flexibility and independent achievement using high quality materials and systematic pedagogic guidance. Effective leadership of GIS puts in place a long-term strategy to foster independent study, focused on the course aims, unique learning needs of students, a suitable plan for academic guidance throughout the year, and well-structured staff development and time allocation systems for supporting students.
