ABSTRACT:
The hypothesis that in visual illusions a counteracting deformation corresponds to the main effect was tested in Zöllner figure. According to the hypothesis, a backward rotation of the short oblique segments would correspond to the illusory convergence/divergence of the vertical lines. Having measured the size of the illusion by modifying the direction of the vertical lines until apparent parallelism is achieved, it was checked whether there is a detectable
backward rotation of the oblique segments. Also the apparent slant of stacks of short oblique segments without long lines was measured. As the divergence/convergence of the vertical lines in Zöllner figure has the same magnitude as the apparent displacement/rotation of the
stacks of oblique segments, it is difficult to decide whether the displacement of the short segments depends on a „compensatory“ effect, or whether the apparent obliquity of the stacks contributes to the main illusory effect.
