ABSTRACT:
In 'Art and visual perception' (1954) Arnheim individuates blue, yellow and red as fundamental primaries (elementary units of chromatic perception) on the basis of the phenomenological characteristic of purity. But this scheme is an instrument for the artist to reach chromatic articulation; it doesn’t necessarily mirror the perceptual functioning. In addition, the definition of purity is circular. We also examine critically the distinction between generator and fundamental primaries. These open problems are the spring for a renewed interest in this intriguing topic.
