ABSTRACT:
‘Constructing Constructs’ was one of three projects undertaken within the Global Studio this semester. The Constructing Constructs project was carried out by the School of Design at Northumbria University in collaboration with the Motorola Design Centre UK, the Motorola Consumer eXperience Design Seoul Studio and Hongik University (Korea). This project explored the following themes: 'Constructing Luxury' and 'Constructing Technology'.
Three Design for Industry (DfI) student groups from Northumbria University were paired with three Industrial Design student groups from Hongik University. In addition MA Design Management students studying at Northumbria observed these industry-based student projects as ‘live’ case studies.
The Constructing Constructs projects provided students from both universities with exciting and rich learning experiences. Linking undergraduate and postgraduate students at Northumbria also provided the MA Design students with a positive learning experience by fostering cultural exchange between these international students and the local undergraduate students. This strategy could be especially relevant to programmes with predominantly international student cohorts. This was the first time many of these international students had had the opportunity to work with local students.
