ABSTRACT:
The unprecedented loss of species has motivated people to conduct considerable research, describing the relationship between species diversity and ecosystem functioning and revealing mechanisms underlying the effect of species diversity on ecosystem functioning. Based on recent advances, we present a review of some key issues on the relationship between species diversity and ecosystem functioning in several representative experimental studies, including microcosm, Ecotron, Cedar Creek grassland experiment, and BIODEPTH, and the application of removal experiment in studies on diversity and ecosystem functioning. Based on current understanding of relationship between species diversity and ecosystem functioning, future challenges and trends are prospected, including extension of experiment results at small temporal and spatial scales, mutual interactions among species diversity changes, ecosystem functioning, and both biotic and abiotic factors, effects of trophic level and species coexistence mechanism on the relationship between species diversity and ecosystem functioning.
