ABSTRACT:
Animal husbandry, including the breeding of cattle, pigs, horses, sheep, goats, poultry and other animals, is the main branch of agriculture in Lithuania. Dairy farming is the most important of these as it gives over 50% of total income from animal husbandry. In the production of nowadays agriculture, attention is focused on the protection of air, soil and water. he article shows the functioning of the programme of standard values for farm manure and milk production in the range of supporting the development of rural areas in Lithuania and stock-raising tendencies and perspectives in pursuance of rural development and environmental control. he study reported in this paper is an attempt to analyse the implementation of the rural development measure “Meeting standards” (nitrates Directive 91/676/EEC and Council Directive 92/46/EEC – Milk Directive) in 2004–2006. There were examined 109 farms from 27 districts of Lithuania. he results show that 66,97% of small and medium-sized farms decided to make request according to either of directives (Nitrates and Milk), 20.18% – according to Milk Directive and 4.58% – according to Nitrates Directive.
