ABSTRACT:
The Report of the National Committee of Inquiry into Higher Education (the Dearing Committee), 'Higher Education in the Learning Society'(1997), is widely recognized as a major landmark in the modern history of UK higher education. This 'Dearing Report: ten years on' volume contributes a wide-ranging, research-based analysis of three main themes: the impact of 10 years of the Dearing Report; the process represented by the work of the National Committee of Inquiry, including in an international context; and current issues and future prospects for UK higher education policy and practice in the light of this history.
The volume is a timely re-examination of the issues that face us in ensuring that higher education serves our society and our economy well, and that it competes successfully in a developing global system. It deserves to be widely read, not just in the UK but by the many people all over the world with an interest in the future of higher education in knowledge economies.
