ABSTRACT:
Railway accidents became a focus of medical attention in the latter half of the nineteenth century, particularly in cases where victims appeared to suffer no bodily injury but complained of severe nervous and mental disorder. This chapter explores the medico-legal debates around such conditions, focusing on the work of the surgeon John Erichsen and the condition dubbed 'Railway Spine'.
