ABSTRACT:
The aim of this paper is to provide a brief overview of the tradition of Gestalt theory in Italy
and its developments in the classical field of perception and other domains of the psychological
sciences. The authors illustrate the origins and rise of the italian Gestalt psychology which was
initiated by Vittorio Benussi and Cesare Musatti. Musatti reached her apogee in the sixties/seventies
with the “school” of Padova and Trieste guided by Fabio Metelli and Gaetano Kanizsa
as well as the teaching of Renzo Canestrari in Bologna. The authors point out that this tradition
and its developments convey the richness of conceptual approaches and applied fields and that
these continue to have a deep effect on the contemporary italian psychology, even if Gestalt
theory is scarcely officially professed.
