ABSTRACT:
There are strong reasons to doubt the late Byzantine tradition that the tomb of Julian the Apostate was preserved in the Church of the Holy Apostles at Constantinople. The explanation for the origin of this tradition probably lies in the popular misidentification of the tomb of Crispus Caesar as that of Julian, due both to its position next to the tomb of Jovian and a misreading of the associated Latin inscription.
