ABSTRACT:
Assumptions about media audiences changed in the years following World War II, evolving
from a notion that audience members are passive receivers of communication to a view that
individuals actively seek out the information they need. One of the major influences on this
paradigm shift was the Gestalt school of psychology. This paper examines the applications of
Gestalt theory to communication and cites the contributions of key individuals who pioneered
the Gestalt movement both in Europe and the U.S.
