ABSTRACT:
As I have recently completed my first year of postgraduate study this paper will mainly be concerned with questions relating to what I’m studying and why, methodological issues, and how I wish my work to progress over the next two years.
My research is an investigation of intimate relationships involving one or more individuals who identify as trans. (transsexual or transgendered). The lived experiences of both transpeople and their partners will be explored, through in-depth face-to-face interviews. Three major concerns which will be focused on initially are sexuality, desire and gender identity. I feel that studying intimate relationships involving transpeople may enable questioning of the gender binary, the rigid categorisation of sexuality and the hierarchical division of sex. I have opted to use queer theory as the theoretical lens for this research, due to its inclusivity of groups of people who are marginalised due to issues surrounding sexuality and gender. However, I do intend to problematise queer theory, due to the fact that whilst being inclusive of some non-normative identities, such as gay and lesbian sexualities, it is not so inclusive of trans. and bisexual identities.
This area of study is original because research into relationships involving transpeople is extremely rare, and at this time no studies have been carried out which involve discussion of desire in such relationships.
