ABSTRACT:
Four sugarbeet varieties viz., Gala and EVA ( monogerm ) , Lola and Lados (polygerm) were sown during two successive seasons 1995/96 and 1996/97. Pegomya mixta females preferred to lay their eggs on the lower side of horizontal the young light green sugarbeet leaves, in small groups (2-3 egg/batch) and on unlimited position on blade leaves in Spring. The maximum egg numbers per batch were 12 and 13 on upper and lower side of sugarbeet leaves , respectively . The ratio of lower : upper sides of sugarbeet was more than one . P. mixta females began to lay their eggs in December till the end of season (May) . The duration of small groups (1-4 eggs/batch) was 150 and decreases with increasing the egg numbers /batch . According to phenological parameters, increasing of possible sunshine duration and/or decreasing relative humidity enhanced the frequency distribution of eggs laying numbers per batch . Sugar beet variety EVA was the least infestation varieties, while the polygerm ones were the most susceptible ones. These findings have important implication to breeders to select a dark green and vertical leaves . For controlling P. mixta , the insecticides should be applied on both sides of sugarbeet leaves especially the lower and young one during February and March. Also, sugarbeet variety EVA was recommended to plant in Egypt.
