ABSTRACT:
Bacterial root rot of sugarbeet occurred in a number of sugarbeet fields in Nubaria region. The causal organism was consistently isolated from infected root tissues and identified as a variety of Erwinia carotovora based on biochemical, physiological and pathogenicity tests. During 1998/99 winter season, eight sugarbeet cultivars namely, Beta poly, Farida, Gloria, Kawimera, Maribo, Oscar, Pamela, and Pleno were tested for their susceptibility to isolates of E. carotovora under field conditions at three different locations, West-Nubaria, Al-Bostan and Nubaria Research Station. At all locations, Beta poly and Pleno cultivars were more susceptible to bacterial rot, however Maribo was the most resistant cultivar. Also, the susceptibility of sugarbeet cultivars was less at Al-Bostan than the West-Nubaria or Nubaria Research Station. The cultivar Beta poly had the least yield and sucrose (16.6 and 20.3%) at West-Nubaria, (12.6 and 15.3%) at Al-Bostan, and 10.6 and 8.7%) at Nubaria Research Station, respectively.
