ABSTRACT:
In out-door pot experiments, eighteen wild beet (beta maritima) lines collected from eight governorates of Egypt, and three sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) cultivars tested to an Erwinia sp. that cause vascular necrosis and rot of sugar beet. Two sugar beet cultivars namely, Poly 1 and Meta Poly 4, and thirteen wild beet lines were found to be susceptible to the sugar beet Erwinia sp. All lines of wild beets collected from Marsa Matrouh and Luxor governorates, and the sugar beet cultivar Kaweterma were highly resistant. These data demonstrate the need for a comprehensive survey and a selection program for Erwinia resistance if these wild beets are to be used in a breeding program to improve quality and disease resistance in sugar beet.
