ABSTRACT:
Colloquium: Given the familiar syndrome that sometimes lone e-learning innovators have struggled to create new ICT products in their garage in a conformist, unsupportive cash-strapped world, we observe that is relatively rare for e-learning developers to be funded through a nationwide approach for e-learning offering beneficial opportunities to pilot new work. A strategic, coordinated approach to the extended piloting of a series of innovative distributed e-learning projects sharing common themes in a learning community is still fairly unusual. Such an opportunity occurred in 2004-06 as a result of the work of the UK Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC). In this period, the JISC e-learning programme invited and funded a series of open innovations linked in a network of distributed UK-wide regional e-learning projects. This colloquium reflects on the benefits of innovation encompassed within the programme, and cites specific examples in a range of distributed e-learning projects.
