ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this study is to justify the role of ten common organic soil amendments (namely, sheep manure, cattle manure, horse manure, pigeon-dung , chicken manure, sewage sludge, green manure , cotton root wastes, sawdust and humic acid) and five inorganic soil amendments (namely, ammonium nitrate 33.5%, potassium nitrate 48%, potassium sulphate 37%, superphosphate 15% and triple superphosphate 44%) on root-knote nematode, Meloidogyne javanica , population in tomato roots in comparison with nematode, Nemacur 10G% , in Egypt. The results indicated that nematicide, Nemacur and all organic and inorganic soil amendments caused a remarkable reduction on the total M. javanica larvae, females and eggmasses in comparison with the check. In addition, some organic soil amendments were superior to inorganic soil amendments and Nemacur in this respect. The organic soil amendments, humic acid , sheep manure, sawdust and chicken manure at rate 2% of soil (20 tons/feddan) significantly reduced the larvae, females and eggmasses; but they inhibited the growth of tomato plants. On the other hand, the other organic soil amendments, viz., cattle manure, green manure , pigeon-dung, sewage sludge, horse manure and cotton root wastes at the same rate stimulated the growth of tomato plants, and significantly decreased the total nematode larvae, females and eggmasses in comparison with the check and nematicide, Nemacur, at the rate 15 kg./Feddan. In addition, superphosphate at the rate 300 kg/Feddan was the best of the tested inorganic soil amendments in reducing the total larvae, females and eggmasses.
