ABSTRACT:
Following on the work of SAVARDI & BIANCHI (presented at the 14th Scientific GTA Convention in Graz, 2005), this paper outlines a cognitive theory of meaning based on a semantic analysis of the reflected image, the “mirror image”. Meaning is characterized as a relational cognitive structure depending on two factors, the agent and the actual situation. Meaning is thus a cognitive phenomena construed by an agent acting within a specific context. Mirror is conceived of as an intrinsically meaningful, meta-relational entity representing things in a specific form, the reverse. Mirror image articulation is characterized by means of a metonymic meaning transformation. The identity-opposition structure is here an influential factor. The metaphor of mind as the “mirror of reality” is an enduring and ubiquitous West European philosophical convention. This assumption is assessed and criticized from a cognitive semantic perspective: things in reality and in mirror are not the same; they are even not the identical representations of each other. (These are only few of the reasons why it is not plausible to characterize mind as a mirror of reality.) The cognitive theory of meaning thus shows that mind can not be understood simply as a reflection of reality. Recommendations for further research include exploring the role of the agent, the “self” or “ego” (or “I”), in the articulation of mirror image and exploring the dynamic of agentenvironment interaction within the cognitive theory of meaning. The aspect that the articulation of meaning is determined by perception deserves special emphasis.
