ABSTRACT:
In this article the author considers Karl Jaspers' concept of border situation. This seminal idea of Jaspers is elucidated and shown to be central to his concept of self- realization. The derivation of certain moral and political norms from this concept demonstrates its practical significance. The application of the concept of border situation to socio-political conditions in present-day South Africa is a further demonstration of this significance. In tracing certain connections between the various forms of border situation and these conditions the author suggests ways in which reflection upon Jaspers concept of border situation may help us to come to terms with our present predicament.
