Problems of translating Indian Writing in English into Spanish, with reference to "A Married Woman" by Manju Kapur

ABSTRACT:
This paper discusses the rendering into Spqnish of a work of fiction by a noted practitioner of Indian Writing in English. The novel examined is Manju Kapur's "A Married Woman" (2002) - a tale of intercommunal political strife and lesbian love set in today's India, translated as "Una mujer casada" by Dora Sales Salvador and published in 2004 by Espasa in Spanish and Mexican editions. The paper considers certain features of Indian Writing in English and its market at home and abroad, as well as the language topography and market characteristics of the recipient, Hispanophone culture, and goes on to examine in detail the translation problems and issues emerging from this case, with concrete textual illustrations.
