ABSTRACT:
For the acquisition of reading competence, it is necessary to understand the writing system and also to possess certain psychological basics, especially concerning perception. This article discusses how these partial skills develop from the point of view of gestalt theory. In particular, the article discusses which aspects of language acquisition match, and which aspects disagree
with, the perspective of gestalt theory. It is argued that aspects of gestalt theory can amend current depictions of the science of literary language acquisition. In addition, the methods that were developed in the 1950’s and 1960’s to teach reading skills are be examined, as these popular, holistic methods are claimed to be inspired by Gestalt theory. This is particularly true of Metzger’s observations
concerning visual and acoustic gestalt perceptions, the latter of which he fi rst transfers to spoken language and then to the writing system itself. From the point of view of gestalt theory, these facts support aspects of the Scheerer-Neumann model of literary language.
