ABSTRACT:
ANALYSIS OF PSYCHICAL STRESSING SITUATIONS IN BEACH VOLLEY-BALL PLAYERS IN THE BRAZILIAN CIRCUIT.

N. S. Vianna Júnior, R. M. Pouças, D. Samulski., Brazil.

Brazilian beach volleyball initiated in Rio de Janeiro beaches’, in the 50’s, and increased in almost all Brazilian states. The Brazilian beach volleyball circuit is considered one of the best in the world and the result of that was the first golden and silver medals in Olympic female beach volleyball.
The purpose of this study was to identify stressful situations of Brazilian beach volleyball athletes. The Beach Volleyball Psychic Stress Test (TEP-VP) which includes stressing situations, a demographic, and a questionnaire were used in this research. Participated in this study, 31 men aged between 18 and 38 (mean 26,6 ±4,81) and 21 women, aged between 17 and 38 (mean 30,6 ±5,47), representing 69% of the female and 79% of the male athletes of the final phase of the Brazilian circuit, in Belo Horizonte city, in October 2000. Results (fig.1) showed situations like “errors in the end of the game”, “conflict with partner”, “inadequate facilities and game conditions”, as the most stressful, while “to be favorite” were the most positive point for female athletes. Male athletes considered “inadequate technical and tactical preparation”, “excessive nervousness”, “inadequate physical conditions” and “be prejudiced by the referee” the most stressful situation, and very positive situations, “alimentation in the competition place” and “behavior of audience in a game in athlete’s home town”.
We found similarities in stress situations in beach volleyball and indoor volleyball (Noce, Chagas & Samulski, 1994; Noce, 1999) and some differences due to the specificity of this sport. Results showed that a regular mental program need to be developed in athletes’ training program, to minimize and control stressful situations (Samulski, Chagas & Nitsch, 1996).
