ABSTRACT:
(This is a continuation of the Abstract in "Systems Engineering of Learning - Publication K-12: Analysis" 1965 by Leonard C. Silvern; taken from pp v-vi)

Among those who contributed to these University efforts were: Dennis Dailey, Patricia Furey, Billy R. Lawson and James A. Durham.

Encouragement by Dr. Donald W. Johnson, California State Department of Education, resulted in the decision in July, 1965, by ETC to publish the first version. Because of the small printing and high cost, a small number of copies were obtained by scholars engaged in educational systems research. In addition to those procured in the U. S., copies found their way to the U.K., Spain and Sweden.

In April, 1968, the Department of Instructional Technology, University of Southern California, conveyed the existing graphic materials, and other items, to Education and Training Consultants Co. (ETC) for the purpose of having these further developed and integrated into a second printing. It was understood that the original manuscript would be re-titled: "SYSTEMS ENGINEERING OF EDUCATION I: THE EVOLUTION OF SYSTEMS THINKING IN EDUCATION," so it would be the first in a series...as originally intended.

Dr. Silvern, however, continued his research beyond the material published in the first and second monographs which have been describedve. Under sponsorship by the Bureau of Research, U.S. Office of Education, he published 'SYSTEMS ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS APPLIED TO OCCUPATIONAL INSTRUCTION IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS," in 1967. This may be considered as the third in the series although the University of Southern California was not at all involved in the award or the research which resulted. It does bring Dr. Silvern's work one step closer to the mathematical modeling of educational systems which is his closing point on page 129.

A new volume, which may considered as the fourth in the series, is now being prepared by Dr. Silvern jointly with Mr. Carl N. Brooks. Like the others, it will begin where the previous one ends. It will be devoted exclusively to mathematical modeling of education and training systems based upon actual applications in real-life.

The author wishes to acknowledge the individual and collective efforts of those persons identified and many who go unrecognized for their encouragement. Among these are students in the DESIGNING INSTRUCTIONAL SYSTEMS course at the University of Southern California, the DESIGNING EDUCATION AND TRAINING SYSTEMS course at the University of California, Los Angeles, and in the DESIGNING EDUCATION AND TRAINING SYSTEMS course conducted by Education and Training Consultants Co. at many locations in several countries.

Appreciation is extended to the many organizations authorizing use of flowchart models and diagrams from the original publications.
