ABSTRACT:
Summary: This article deals with the legal status of women in various states of Eastern and Southern Africa, particularly in the field of family law and law of succession. A historic overview of the emergence and construction of legal pluralism during the colonial period is followed by the discussion of important court cases and legislation regarding gender equality. The focus is particularly placed on the conflict between the general law of the state and African customary or Roman-Dutch common law. Finally, suggestions are made concerning the reform and harmonisation of family laws and laws of succession.
