ABSTRACT:
Summary: Although the Third Wave of Democratisation has seen the emergence of hundreds of new political parties, there has been very little research on parties and party politics. Our knowledge of political parties is, therefore, very superficial, implying a need for fundamental research on this subject. Such research has, however, had to start from the beginning as the earlier work from the 1960s and 1970s is now dated: the concepts underpinning this research were based entirely on West European experience and are no longer appropriate. This article explores a new approach to empirical research, and one that is not coupled with the conventional concepts of West European party research, and which should contribute to a clearer understanding of the nature of African parties and their place in the democratic process.
