ABSTRACT:
Connectives are often used to create a sense of internal coherence in texts. The coordinative connective `and' can occur as a discourse marker but also within sentences. The paper argues that the connective in pseudo-coordinative structures in English is a connective within the event structure of the verb. It connects/coordinates Aktionsarten. Thus, the connective qualities of coordination at clausal level are mirrored deep within event structure. The implication of this is that, contrary to one trend within discourse analysis, connectives cannot be seen merely as `supra-syntactic' discourse linkers, but also have a very similar role to play within the syntactic and semantic structures of sentences.
