ABSTRACT:
Right-node-raising has been a difficult problem for syntactic theory. A subtype of RNR is the RNR of coordinated structures (CORNR). These unusual structures have not been widely discussed and have hitherto been seen as problematic for all the proposed syntactic analyses. The article argues that the theory has progressed to the point when CORNR constructions offer ways of distinguishing various analyses in subtle ways. The paper argues that CO/RNR is underpinned by neither base-generation, nor movement. Instead, an analysis is proposed in terms of `bending' tree structures in response to a PF constraint on the linearization of coordinate structures.
