ABSTRACT:
Until the middle of last century, Gestalt psychology has been an important part of Japanese Psychology. This paper analyzes the reasons for this influence, starting with the development of Gestalt psychological thinking in Germany and its connections to philosophical precursors. Next, based on the personal contacts of young Japanese scientists in Germany, and different topics of research in Japanese
psychology, the influence of Gestalt psychology in Japan is shown. Finally, Kitaro Nishida explores the similarities between Japanese thinking, with its Buddhist roots, and Gestalt Theory, with its phenomenological and Kantian roots, using the concept of ‘pure experience’ (junsui keiken).
