ABSTRACT:
In his preface to the Italian edition of Wolfgang Metzger's Gestalt Psychology, Gaetano Kanizsa gets to the bottom of the widely held prejudices and misinterpretations that Gestalt psychology has been, and still is, subjected to. He explains how these misconceptions came about, gives sound reasons for their refutation, and clarifies the Gestalt theoretical position. This article explores the seductive power of either/or ways of thinking, and emphasizes the need to be open minded, receptive and impartial in order to do justice to the nature of complex wholes.
