ABSTRACT:
This study aimed to determine whether recreation and sport could be used as an intervention strategy to rehabilitate prisoners. The research instrument was a combination of the standardised Recreation and Sport (Leisure) Diagnostic Battery (LDB) of Witt and Ellis (1989) and the standardised TEOSQ (Task and Ego Orientation Questionnaire) of Duda and Nicholls (1989). The questionnaire was completed by 393 prisoners (262 male juveniles and 131 females) from 7 youth prisons and 4 women’s prisons. The results showed that both male and female prisoners were relatively young and that they had a high level of education. Highly significant relations (positive and negative) were established between the variables of this study. The recreation and sport diagnostic battery correlated positively with each of its own sub-scales. Using these findings, recreation programmes were introduced in selected prisons. Key words: recreation, intervention, rehabilitation, prisoners
