ABSTRACT:
The variation of air temperatures in Bulgaria is investigated in the context of global climate change. The time series for winter time (November – April) surface air temperature (SAT) in Bulgaria were analyzed using a combination of statistical analyses such as correlation analysis, trend analysis and empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. The EOF analysis shows that the first EOF can explain the most part (89%) of the winter time SAT variation in Bulgaria. The spatial anomaly pattern is characterized by the same anomaly (positive or negative) sign over Bulgaria with higher amplitude in the northern part. The second EOF explains almost half of the remainder variance, which has opposite anomaly signs between northern and southern Bulgaria. For period 1931-1990 most of territories are described with a positive linear trend. As for more recent years (1961-1990) the positive trend is characteristic only for the north part of the country.
