ABSTRACT:
The space of vision can be variously analyzed according to the characteristics pertaining to the optical space, the space of phenomenal appearances, and the pictorial space. According to a theory of levels of reality, these ‘spaces’ are ontologically distinct.
Particularly interesting are the characteristics of the phenomenal space, whose primitives and qualities appear to be very different, for example, from those pertaining to the physical space of optics. In other words, the primary qualities of phenomenal space of appearances should not be identified with the Galileian qualities (metrical extension, number, mass, motion, etc.). The primary qualities of the phenomenal space, in fact, are qualitative, meaningful, and adjectival/adverbial in character. Specifically, they are not symbolic, and they are not viewpoint invariant in the sense of accidental properties.
Also, they are not indexes of external entities, since their objects are not transcendent.
My contribution, based on Gestalt experiments and an experimental phenomenological approach, tries to delineate a preliminary theory of the qualities of the appearances of the phenomenal world of perception.
