ABSTRACT:
The article surveys latest evidence on poverty, the absence of income convergence, unemployment, export concentration, real purchasing power of the poorest 20 %, and time series data on globalization, inequality, economic growth, and unemployment, and comes to the conclusion that pessimistic re-interpretations of EU-enlargement as an increase in the relationships of dependency and inequal development with Western Europe cannot be dismissed easily. The author agrees with Hannes Hofbauer and other dependency and world system researchers on the need for further, more thorough empirical research into these questions to understand the political dynamics of populism and partial instability now evolving in the "new Europe" after EU-enlargement.
