ABSTRACT:
Thorugh his landmark text, The Human Side of Enterprise, Douglas McGregor had a profound influence on management thinking and writing. In particular, his elucidation of Theory X and Theory Y stimulated much excitement about possible increases in human work motivation. Yet, McGregor's theorizing has never really been tested, because of the virtual absence of construct validation research. At best, evaluations of the efficiacy of management interventions consistent with Theory Y have been interpreted as tests of McGreggor's theorizing. The present research describes initial attempts to devlop construct valid measures of Thoery X/Y assumptions and behaviors.
