ABSTRACT:
Allen Eaton worked for years to create a Department of Art and Social Work in the Russell Sage Foundation. Edith Dame Campbell became associated with the foundation through her husband, John C. Campbell who pioneered Appalachian studies through support from the foundation. Campbell was also a pioneer in the Conference of Souther Mountain Workers, After the death of her husband in 1919, and the founding of an Appalachian folk school, Ms. Campbell developed an association with Mr. Eaton which was a pioneering force in the development of the Appalachian arts and crafts movement. This institutional association between art and social work was unmatched anywhere else and was terminated following Mr. Eaton's retirement.
