ABSTRACT:
The chapters in this book have been divided them into three parts: one on general subjects, another on Defoe and the third one on Dickens. Concern with history „o whether in the works studied or in the circumstances surrounding the author of these papers „o may be said to be the common feature and the hallmark of all these papers. A certain concept of English studies (clearly set out in the first paper) also informs most of them. Spawned by the shock of ¡§hard facts¡¨ in the wake of the ¡Vnow first Gulf War, the book yet advocates an international ¡§public sphere¡¨ in which new canons, new grounds for mutual understanding and communication, can be developed. Using an approach in which location is the key to historicity, it explores works and aspects of Defoe and Dickens and lays emphasis on the naturally historical character of the pleasurable, ludic aspects of literature.
