ABSTRACT:
The article of Uhlhaas & Silverstein Gestalt Theory 25, 256-279) is appreciated with respect to their multi-methodic perspective, which brings together several points of view. But being mindful of these, we have to face the danger of a premature interpretation of cognitive peculiarities in schizophrenic patients with the aid of a specific gestalt-theoretical explanation. Regarding the difficulties in mastering methodical problems concerning experimental studies within the area of psychopathology, detailed descriptions from patients with reference to their disturbances are of crucial importance. Problems arise if particular reports from patients are in disaccord with results that were obtained using other resarch methods. The heterogeneity of cognitive symptoms should be discussed as well as their temporary fluctuations, all this within a holistic framework.
