ABSTRACT:
This research adopts an ethnographic approach focusing on the external advice seeking linkages of software firms in China. Case study evidence indicates that software engineers maintain strong advice seeking linkages with the outside world through specialised Internet technology forums, rather than personal networks. The former offer numerous advantages compared to the latter as external sources of advice seeking for solving technical problems arising in the everyday software development process. We therefore argue that the advice seeking linkages in Internet technology forums not only integrate localised communities of practice within firms, but also strengthen a technological community of software engineering practice much beyond firm boundaries.
