Bulgarian political thought during Middle ages, the Slavonic translation of John Malalas' Chronicle, the Name list of the Bulgarian khans, John Exarch's Hexameron
ABSTRACT:
The article analyses the way in which the Old Bulgarian writers and translators from the end of 9th and the beginning of 10th centuries correlate the pagan past of their people with its new Christian identity. It traces the urge of those authors to emphasize the ancient origins of the Bulgarians and the tenacity of their state and political traditions, whose preservation strengthens the authority of the ruler's institution and allows Christian Bulgaria - owing to its high degree of spiritual and cultural autonomy acquired as a result of the adoption of the Slavonic letters - to preserve the political independence gained by the pagan khans in the course of their wars against the Byzantine empire.
