ABSTRACT:
The article develops and surveys the theory and evidence on the interaction between the market mechanism and distribution coalition prone environments and reaches the conclusion that market mechanisms are especially important in multi-ethnic societies. The article also qualifies empirically Samuel Huntington's pessimistic visions of vicious circle of egalitarian populism in the Third World.
