ABSTRACT:
Management Information Systems (MIS), as a field of study, has been characterized as very diversified. Despite being a fairly new field, it has evolved considerably over the years. The purpose of this study is to present an overview of the changes of MIS research that occurred between two periods 1984 to 1986 and 1996 to 1998, based on articles published in MIS Quarterly and Information Systems Research. The articles were analyzed according to specificity of topic, technological approach, research methods, and keywords. Differences were found between the two periods. A cognitive map of the relationships between main topics and keywords is presented for each periods. The various results are discussed. They tend to show a promising tendency toward the development of an evolutionary and cumulative research tradition.
