The paper provides a comprehensive review of economist´s research endeavours in the field of tourism. While discussing the advances of economics into various subdisciplines such as micro- and macroeconomics of tourism, environmental economics in tourism or the economics of tourism policy making the paper attempts to critically evaluate these contributions and points at possible research gaps and/or complementary contributions from neighbouring social science disciplines.
