ABSTRACT:
Although this book sometimes jumps about chronologically, geographically and topically, it is a joy to read. There have been a number of books and papers on both submarine development and on the activities of the Rev. George Garrett, but none are as informative and as well written as this. Col. Paul Bowers has built a reputation for making submarine models, and this has obviously given him an eye for detail and accuracy which is reflected in this work. It is enhanced by an analytical approach to the available evidence, something which both maritime historians and archaeologists will appreciate.
