ABSTRACT:
Longitudinal data from nearly 400 engineers were used to examine expectancy theory predictions of work motivation and job performance. Five boundary conditions (e.g., time, initial level of the criterion)were identified that served to reduce the magnitude of expectancy theory predictions. Conversely, when these factors were taken into account, expectancy theory predictions were enhanced.
